Introduction
The process, exclusively developed by Pennwalt India Limited, for
processing Safflower extractions,is capable of producing a protein
concentrate having 50-60% O&A from the Safflower extraction
having 20-21% O&A.These protein concentrates have therefore
found application in compounding cattle feed,as the process
is completely devoid of chemical addition, quite unlike the conventional
protein isolate processes, wherein the addtion apparently imparts
a disaggreable flavour and the isolate is unacceptable as an
ingredient in cattle feed compositions.
The Process
The Pennwalt Protein Concentrate Process is based on the premise
that the multitudinous cavitational effect of ultrasonics can
be used for disintegration of the Safflower Extraction suspended
in an aqueous medium to produce fine particles that have substantially
more protein levels than in the coarser particles,Thus protein
beneficiation is carried out by the purely physical techniques
of ultrasonic disintegration primary separation on a vibroscreen
fines underflow and thereafter dewatering the vibroscreen on
a Decanter Centrifuge. The dewatered cake from the Decanter Centrifuge
is then conventionally dried in a convective drier to produce
the protein concetrate. The spent hull fraction contains 3.5
to 4.0% protein and the protein concentrate produced has 50%-60%
protein. The following flow sheet gives diagrammatic presentation
of the process.
Processing Capacity
From 10 tpd to 100 tpd Safflower Extractions.
